Welcome to our independendent guide to Oxnard, California written by people who live here.
About Our City
Oxnard is named after Henry T. Oxnard, the man who developed the first major industry here, a sugar beet factory in the 1890's. Oxnard California is the largest city in Ventura County and has grown considerably since being incorporated in 1903. The beauty of miles of agriculture is balanced perfectly with the white sandy beaches which border Oxnard's coastline. Oxnard beaches have beautiful sunsets, sand dunes, and world class surf which provide a great setting for other activities such as swimming, kayaking, biking or just taking in the warm sun.
Many new shopping areas have also been developed, and downtown Oxnard has been enhanced with the relocation of extravagantly refurbished, historic houses. Come discover Oxnard’s exceptional coastal setting and hometown charm. Don’t miss our local theatre groups, ballets, community concerts, and fantastic symphony performances. Oxnard boasts several important museums and the city is also a departure point for the Channel Islands National Park. Come stay at one of the many vacation rentals or at one of Oxnard's prominent hotels.
Visit our great city and tell everybody, you read it here first. SEE YA IN OXNARD!

I'm glad I found this on a message board and it's a trip because this has been like an Oxnard reunion day. I'm 7000 miles away, have been for 8 years and lived on both Hollywood Beach and mostly Silverstrand. I was in contact this morning after many years with a guy who was a Silverstrand pioneer and has had sites about Oxnard and the beach since 1998 online, so this is a real coincidence because I saw his pictures and rememembered.
I moved there when it was so cheap rent was under 100 bucks a month. There were no big houses. The surf was perfect and the waves were free.
I watched as it became discovered, the beaters and surf wheels were being replaced with beamers and mercedes containing neck-gawkers looking like they'd discovered the holy grail.
LA was too expensive, even moving up the coast from Malibu was costly, Trancas the last. So what's next on the map? Yep, Silverstrand and Hollywood Beach.
Hollywood knew of this place well as it was created as a set for the Sheik and many stars had hideouts there in the 40's. Other than them were military families. The houses were scattered and it had the aura of no man's land. It was paradise, even if the snoots in the North End thought it was for white trash scum.
The beamers and mercedes came back with money. They tore down and they built. Then the early builders, like Fox, started making these gawdawful beasts so close together you could hear your neighbor snore.
It was still peppered with surfers, drug dealers, and those unfortunate enough to be on welfare when I left and came to Europe. Like the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon, he has a house there and right next door was a crack house and then there were the single moms and lone artists -- actually quite a collective, but from what I'm hearing now, it's almost impossible to live there as the rents soar and the southers want more.
This beach is for local's only..... Agression said it all. I'm glad I'm gone now. Nope, I can't go home again. The memories are definitely better than the new reality.
